IOB is seeking to fill a full-time vacancy for 

Luana Russo and Maarten Vink are part of an international consortium that has been awarded a European Commission Action Grant to work on the project “Fostering Awarness, Inclusion and Recognition of EU mobile citizens’ Political Rights” (FAIREU). The project aims to foster the successful inclusion of the EU mobile citizens in their host EU country’s civic and political life through the provision of a holist approach to tackling obstacles they face when exercising their political rights. 

Next Wednesday, 31 January 2018, we welcome Ayla Bonfiglio to share her latest work with us. The migration seminar series is offered jointly by UNU-MERIT/MGSoG in collaboration with MACIMIDE, and features researchers and practitioners whose work addresses human mobility. 

Workshop: Whispering in the Prince’s Ear? The role of JHA agencies in informing EU policy responses to the ‘migration crisis’ 

Co-directed by Professors Engin Isin and Kimberley Hutchings QMUL-LDS will involve 21 PhD research projects (2018-2023) concerned with how the world is being dynamically constituted by mobile people in active and novel ways and how this affects fundamental social and political institutions. Its aim is to generate theories, concepts, methods, and data that are necessary to understand mobility as a way of life – not as an exception but as an emerging norm. Current research demonstrates that developments in human mobility are interrelated with the ways in which they are studied, interpreted, documented, and managed.  Thus, thinking about mobility as a way of life entails reflexivity about the processes of producing knowledge about mobile lives in an increasingly mobile world: how we study, manage, govern, and imagine it. 

There is growing international recognition of the importance of linkages between diaspora and diplomacy. Some governments view diaspora as a soft power resource that extends nation-state capacities – ministries, institutions, and programmes have been created to engage diaspora as agents of diplomatic and development goals. At the same time, there is discordance about the value and impact of such engagement and little shared knowledge about the diverse ways in which diaspora are actively shaping arenas of social, economic and political development. 

The University of Aberdeen, in collaboration with the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme, is delighted to offer six Early Stage Researcher (PhD) positions, lasting 3 years starting in September 2018, for ground-breaking research on how political concepts, such as citizenship, civil society and rule of law, are used in the world.
