The EU has been investing significantly in economic development in West Africa, however, the scope of this economic support often goes beyond the mere improvement of the region’s social and economic well-being, as the EU has been using its assistance also to negotiate cooperation with countries of origin or transit on migration governance.

Climate change and environmental disasters drive and disproportionately impact displaced people, refugees and migrants. In 2020, environmental disasters were responsible for 30.7 million newly displaced persons worldwide (IDMC 2021), with the vast majority linked to climate-related issues.

In her latest video, Prof. Siegel looks at the impact of migration in health outcomes in migrant countries. In doing this Melissa begins by examining what health outcomes are and how migration can result in changes to a family’s socio-economic standing, this can include both economic remittances as well as social remittances (the transfer of knowledge or customs that may impact on one’s life). 

A new study by the EU-IOM Knowledge Management Hub and UNU-MERIT/United Nations University, with funds from the European Union, investigated the impact of type of return and gender on returnees‘ economic, social and psychosocial well-being.
