Call for papers: Workshop on The Role of Law and Courts in Migration Politics
On 13 and 14 November 2025, the Leuphana University Lüneburg is organizing the workshop The Role of Law and Courts in Migration Politics.
Summary: The workshop provides a forum for critical and interdisciplinary perspectives on the role of law and courts in migration politics. It will explore how legal norms, categories, and institutions not only regulate migration but also actively shape and constitute it. At the same time, the workshop aims to examine the ambivalent relationship between migration policy and the judiciary. Situated at the intersection of sovereignty claims and human rights obligations, courts are simultaneously accused of undermining democratic processes and portrayed as guardians of democracy—a tension that raises urgent questions about the rule of law, legitimacy, and the potential for legal resistance.
The call for papers can be found here. The deadline for abstract submissions is 31 July 2025. Travel and accommodation costs for participants will be covered.
