Call for papers: Ghent Africa Platform GAPSYM 18 Conference (Ghent University)

 

The symposia organised by the AUGent Africa Platform have been trendsetting in the Belgian academic landscape over the last 18 years, providing a unique interdisciplinary forum to showcase academic research conducted in collaboration with African-based partners. 

GAPSYM18 will delve into how resources shape Africa’s socio-economic, environmental, andcultural landscapes and define Africa’s position in today’s globalisation. 

The conference will take place in Ghent, although online participation will be possible. 

The conference encourages cross-disciplinary and innovative approaches to the following sub-themes: 

  • Histories and contemporalities of extractivism of natural resources 
  • Africa and the race for critical raw materials 
  • Contested resources, politics and war 
  • Land rights and the consequences of land acquisition 
  • Cross-border resource management and regional cooperation 
  • Climate change, loss & damage to natural resources

  • Life, viability, and social resilience in Africa’s resource landscapes 
  • Knowledges as resource 
  • Culture as a resource for well-being in Africa 
  • Linguistic resources 
  • From biobanks to breakthroughs: Unlocking Africa’s biomedical potential
