Next Thursday 4 October, the PhD candidate Jennifer Waidler will defend her doctoral thesis, under the title: “Social Assistance and Remittances and Their Role in the Fight Against Poverty”.

Recent years have seen migration rise to the top of political agendas around the world. In December 2018 states adopted two Global Compacts, one on migration and one on refugees, establishing roadmaps for the future of international cooperation relevant to population movements.

On Wednesday 4 November, at 12:00 o’clock, Merve Özer will defend her PhD titled “Essays on drivers and long-term impact of migration”

On Friday 5 February 2021 at 10:00, Inge Hooijen will defend her PhD with the title “Place attractiveness: A study of the determinants playing a role in residential settlement behaviour”. The aim of this dissertation is to create more insight into various factors that are at play in better understanding the attractiveness of places and the ability of places to attract and retain (new) residents. Four empirical studies in this dissertation are conducted which focus on living preferences, (im)mobility intentions, (im)mobility behaviour and location choice respectively. The event will be live streamed.

Conflict-induced displacement is associated with shifts that may have differential impacts on women and men. These shifts include the loss of assets and livelihoods, lack of opportunities, among others. This dissertation applies a gender lens to the empirical analysis of the impacts of displacement in Colombia, a middle-income country with the second largest internally displaced population in the world. The study estimates the effects of displacement on household structures, gender roles, poverty, and gender norms.

The aim of this thesis is to increase knowledge on educational outcomes in low income and lower-middle-income countries by examining the intergenerational correlation of education in multiple dimensions, given the complexity inherent in the concept and the global persistence in the number of early school leavers. The proposition is that in order to combat the high rate of school dropout among the poor and to increase the intergenerational mobility of education, it is necessary to explore the role played by the reduction in the intergenerational mobility on inequalities that occur early in the lives of children. In other words, gaps that emerge early in life among families that need to be addressed and offset. These are gaps that exist due to inherited limited opportunities from parents and a lack of basic necessities for a comfortable standard of living.
