Expertise centre ITEM is the pivot of research, counselling, knowledge exchange and training activities with regard to cross-border mobility and cooperation. When it comes to topical issues, ITEM keeps its finger on the pulse. Although the refugee crisis has been going on for quite some time, the issue remains strongly present in the news. Where the discussion was first aimed at the reception of refugees and the processing of asylum applications, it is now shifting to other themes such as integration.

Thomas Huddleston Senior MACIMIDE Visiting Fellowship

Thomas Huddleston, Programme Director on Migration and Integration at the Migration Policy Group and part-time PhD fellow at Maastricht University, Campus Brussels will be taking up a part-time Senior Visiting Fellowship at the Maastricht Center for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE) from 1 March until the end of 2017.

ITEM’s scientific coordinator, dr. Alexander Hoogenboom, has been awarded ‘first place’ in the European Law Faculties Association 2016 doctoral thesis competition on European law for his thesis Balancing Student Mobility Rights and National Higher Education Autonomy in the European Union.

Professor Valentina Mazzucato has been nominated by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific research (NWO) to join AcademiaNet – the Expert Database for Outstanding Women in Academia. In becoming part of the database, Valentina joins colleagues such as Karin Bijsterveld, Jenny Slatman and, more recenty, Anna Harris.
