Today, on the World Refugee Day, the organisations working together on the international research project NIEM have begun a social media campaign #AllInForIntegration in order to draw public attention to the need for a more efficient and effective integration policy that better addresses the needs of refugees. 

A large number of MACIMIDE researchers will present their work at the upcoming 14th Annual Conference of IMISCOE, Europe’s largest network of scholars in the area of migration and integration. MACIMIDE is one of IMISCOE’s 38 member institutes. The 14th Annual Conference of IMISCOE will take place in Rotterdam on June 28-30 and focus on Migration, Diversity and the City (the full program of the conference can be found here). 

On 19-20 June 2017, Dr. Natasja Reslow of Macimide attended the informal thematic session on international cooperation and governance of migration at the United Nations in Geneva.

Maarten Vink has been appointed Willy Brandt Guest Professor at the Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare (MIM) at Malmö University for the academic year 2017-2018. 

Maarten Vink co-editor of Oxford Handbook of Citizenship 

MACIMIDE co-director prof. Maarten Vink is one of the co-editors of the Oxford Handbook of Citizenship, together with Ayelet Shachar, Rainer Bauboeck, and Irene Bloemraad. The book has recently been published by Oxford University Press. 

On 3 July 2017 the concluding workshop of the UM-Macimide PREMIUM project was held. This project, which was financed by Macimide, was carried out within the framework of PREMIUM, which is Maastricht University’s interdisciplinary honours programme for master’s students.

On 1 July Natasja Reslow was invited to give a presentation at Route66, the youth talent development programme of the Dutch political party D66.

Floris Peters and Maarten Vink receive APSA Best Chapter Award 

The migration and citizenship section of the American Political Science Association (APSA) has awarded the ‘2016 Best Chapter Award’ to a book chapter by Floris Peters and Maarten Vink. 

Maarten Vink appointed ROA Research Fellow 

 MACIMIDE co-director prof. Maarten Vink has been appointed as research fellow at the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA), a research institute of the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE). 

To get a residence permit in the Netherlands, or elsewhere in Europe, asylum seekers need to tell a credible story about their identity, their country of origin and the reason they fled. Yet the way in which asylum officials ask questions does not always make for a good test of reality. This is the conclusion of Tanja van Veldhuizen’s PhD dissertation, which she will defend at Maastricht University on 22 September. One solution may be to ask more open questions.
