In this new country case study series on the UK Melissa Siegel looks at the history of migration, migration policy and the modern situation in the United Kingdom. In her first video she addresses the history from the Norman Conquest through to the migration as a result of EU membership. In this she touches on various points in British migration history turning attention to internal migration and to Windrush migration. 

In this video Melissa Siegel uses data from the EU’s Atlas on Migration to look at the migratory situation in Spain. In doing this she looks at both the flows and stocks as well as at measures of social inclusion, education and participation in the labour market. 

Melissa Siegel takes a look at the new RemitSCOPE platform that “compiles and analyses data on all 54 African countries providing multi-layered information on diaspora, remittances, regulation, access, market players and financial inclusion.” 

How is the prohibition of refoulement interpreted by United Nations Treaty Bodies UNTBs in their individual decision-making? Do UNTBs act as ‘soft courts’ that are more progressive interpreters than hard courts? 

On 23 September 2021 the Maastricht Centre for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE) in collaboration with the Dutch Association for Migration Research (DAMR) organizes its multidisciplinary and annual conference devoted to topics focusing on development and migration, return migration and displacement, migrants and the receiving society and migration in light of Covid19. In addition, we have a photo exhibition and several interesting workshops focussing on doing research during Covid19, the segregation of migrants and expats. 

In this series Melissa Siegel looks at migration in India over three videos. The first video examines the history of Indian Migration, she examines the impact of colonialism on migration as well as the 1947 partition before moving on to the more modern migration history. 

Using the EU Atlas on Migration, Prof. Siegel looks at migration in Italy. This includes looking at the stocks and flows of immigrants as well as the issuing of residence permits. She went on to address the issuance of residence permits, asylum seekers and irregular migration. 

Based on predictions from last year and the work of the World Bank, Melissa Siegel addresses the effects that Covid-19 had on remittances during 2020. She starts by identifying that the effects were not as considerable as had originally been predicted.

Melissa Siegel has given a lecture on the misconceptions we have about migrants. In her lecture she addresses the actual nature of global migration compared with the perceived level of migration.

In this new video Melissa Siegel looks at the migration situation in Greece using the European Union’s Atlas on Migration. The video looks at both the stocks and flows of migrants in Greece, including the issuance of residence permits and the number of asylum claims and the volume of irregular migration.
