1-2/12/2016 Conference “30 Years Later – Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, The Limburg Principles and Migration”, the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights
In June 1986 a group of distinguished experts in international (human rights) law convened in Maastricht, the Netherlands, to deliberate the nature and scope of state parties’ obligations under the InternationalCovenant on Economic,Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).This meeting resulted in the agreement and adoption of the so-called Limburg Principles on the Implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
These Principles have proven an important step in the development of our understanding of the nature and scope of states’ obligation with regard to economic, socialandcultural (ESC) rights. Aprocess that has been continued by the 1997 Maastricht Guidelines on Violations of ESC Rights and the 2011 Maastricht Principles on extraterritorial Obligations of States in the Area of ESC Rights.
