The ‘Transforming Mobility and Immobility: Brexit and Beyond’ IMISCOE Spring Conference will take place on 28-29 March 2019 in Sheffield, UK. 

On 25 and 26 June Karlijn Haagsman represented MACIMDE at the YERUN (Young European Research Universities Network) Research workshop on Migration and Integration hosted by Dublin City University.

The European Commission has awarded funding for what is probably the largest-ever European-funded research project on migration, set to start work in September 2018. 

Next Friday 5 October will take place a Symposium in honour of Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Jessurun d’Oliveira at the occasion of his 85th birthday. The topic of the symposium will be the following: ‘European citizenship: A pie in the sky? Looking back on 25 years of experiences and challenges ahead’. 

Every 18 December, the United Nations celebrate International Migrants Day to recognise the efforts, contributions, and rights of migrants worldwide. A perfect moment to speak with Arjen Leerkes, who was appointed Professor of ‘Migration, Securitisation and Social Cohesion’ at Maastricht University and UNU-MERIT last month, about the position of immigrants in our societies. Where can asylum seekers go when they are trying to flee their country? Should they stay in the same region, or can they go elsewhere? 

Last week UM News/UM Magazine published an interview with Prof. Hildegard Schneider about her research, her career and her students. The article expands on the extensive work on her work establishing several of UM’s interdisciplinary research institutes (namely MACIMIDE, ITEM and MACCH).

Raphaela Schweiger will speak about her new book ‘Beyond states: The Global Compact for Migration and the role of non-state actors and cities‘, and her take on the evolution and future of global migration governance.

Several MACIMIDE researchers contributed to the first anthology of creative nonfiction by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) at Maastricht University. The anthology uses the techniques of creative writing to bring research to life for a non-specialist readership.
