Marie Labussière defended her PhD dissertation “Native born but not yet citizen. Citizenship and educational outcomes of the children of immigrants in the Netherlands” on Wednesday 3 November earning the distinction cum laude. An article about her research was also published in the Volkskrant. 

Melissa Seigel has recently published a video on the Migration Research Hub. The Migration Research Hub is a central point where you can access migration-related literature, data, and expert profiles. 

In her newest video Melissa Siegel explores the specific case of Canada’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees program which is a programme to resettle refugees to Canada through the sponsorship of private citizens or organisations. This is in addition to the regular Government-Assisted Refugee Program. 

On 2 December 2021, the Global Citizenship Observatory (GLOBALCIT) launches a new GLOBALCIT Citizenship Law Dataset. 

Last week we (an international team led by Dr Katie Kuschminder) launched a website on ‘Women and Migration’ featuring 8 case studies, alongside teaching and other resources. The Women and Migration website is a new platform that brings people closer to the stories of women who migrate. 

Prof. Siegel’s video looks at the current migration situation in Portugal on the basis of the European Commission Atlas on Migration. Melissa starts by looking at the stocks and flows of migrants in Portugal before moving on to looking at the purpose of residence permits and looking at data on refugee applications.

Prof. Melissa Siegel received the Distinguished Alumna Award from the College of Charleston, USA on 20 November 2021. This award was established to recognise those alumni who have made significant contributions to their professions or to their communities over a long period of time, thus reflecting favourably on the College of Charleston. Prof. Siegel received her Bachelors in Economics with a Minor in Business from the College of Charleston and graduated from the Honors College in 2003. 

In her latest video Prof. Siegel looks at the current migration situation in Afghanistan and specifically the forced migration situation in/from Afghanistan as of Nov. 2021. In her video Melissa Siegel looks at why migration flows are lesser than what was expected, she also looks at the demographics of people registering for asylum in neighboring States. 

In this video Melissa Siegel looked at the current (as of early December 2021) migrant situation at the EU (Poland, Latvia, or Lithuania )-Belarus border.
