Vacancy: Postdoctoral Research and Writing Fellowships, Max-Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen. Deadline 25/01/2016

The Max-Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen is offering Postdoctoral Research and Writing Fellowships.

The new Department of Ethics, Law and Politics, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Ayelet Shachar, is seeking to appoint up to three postdoctoral research fellows with an outstanding academic record. Applicants
should have substantive legal or political theory expertise in the fields of citizenship, immigration, borders and the regulation of mobility, the ethics of diversity, and the study of cultural or religious pluralism. The focus is on cutting-edge legal and theoretical puzzles. We expect the selected postdoctoral researchers to complete a monograph or a series of peer-reviewed articles during the fellowship term. We welcome candidates with advanced degrees (PhD, JSD, or equivalent) in political science, law, philosophy, international relations, economics, and human geography. The duration of the in-residence fellowship positions will be up to two years. Awards are made on the basis of scholarly excellence and research promise.

The Max Planck Institute offers an excellent research environment for talented postdoctoral fellows. The Institute operates in English and is located in the scenic university town of Göttingen. Fellows-in-residence
are expected to devote the majority of their time to their individual research projects, take leadership in organizing international conferences and other academic events, publish their work in leading academic
venues, and participate fully in the intellectual life of the Institute. Their projects must relate to one or more of the core themes of the department’s research program:
The legal construction of borders and membership boundaries
The intersection of states and markets in defining “who belongs”
The relationship between diversity and equality in public law and/or private dispute resolution

The fellowships are open to all regardless of citizenship. The deadline for receipt of application is 25 January 2016. The envisaged starting date is 1 April 2016 or 1 October 2016. Applications must be submitted in English and include a cover letter describing the intersection of your work
with the department’s research themes (up to 500 words), a list of publications and CV, a sample of writing in English (preferably written or published within the past two years), a writing plan/research proposal for
the project you wish to undertake during the period of the postdoctoral fellowship (up to 1000 words), and two letters of recommendation written by scholars who are familiar with your work. Applicants should also
send a record of university diplomas and transcripts. Compensation is based on the German public service scale TVöD, level E 13, which is equivalent to approximately EUR 43,000 per year.

The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the participation of women wherever they are underrepresented; therefore, applications from women are particularly welcome. Following its commitment to an equal
opportunities employment policy, the Max Planck Society also especially encourages persons with a disability to submit their applications.
