Vacancy: PhD in ‘Analyzing inequalities in civic engagement and perception of immigrants’

In the context of the new Doctoral Training Unit on “Migration, Inequalities and Labour Markets” established by the University of Luxembourg (UL) and the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), with the financial support of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) in the framework of its Program for Research Intensive Doctoral Education (PRIDE), we are currently offering:

PhD (Doctoral Candidate) positions (m/f)

– Ref: 17-07

– Full time position, 40h/week

– 3 years fixed contract, with a possible extension to a 4th year

–  One of 8 general research streams : Analyzing inequalities in civic engagement and perception of immigrants among native and immigrant youth before and after the “immigration crisis” in Europe using the ICCS data. Focus on individual, parents’, and school-level characteristics.

Application and selection

 Applicants are expected to:

  • Hold a Research Master’s degree in Economics or in quantitative Sociology;
  • Have a strong background in at least one of the three fields: migration, inequalities and labor market;
  • Have good English language skills;
  • Be willing to work in an inter-cultural and international environment;
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Be passionate about research.

We aim to increase the proportion of women in research and therefore explicitly encourage qualified female graduates to apply. Furthermore, we want to promote compatibility of family and work. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference if equally qualified.

We offer:

  • A full time, fixed term contract for up to three years, with a possible extension to four years, either at UL or LISER (depending on project);
  • Enrollment as a PhD fellow in the Doctoral School of Economics and Finance or the Doctoral School in Social Sciences at UL leading to the completion of a degree of PhD in Economics or PhD in Social Sciences;
  • Intensive training in scientific and transferable skills, participation in summer and winter schools, conferences and workshops;
  • A dynamic and well-equipped research environment;
  • Personal work space at UL or LISER (depending on project).

Applicants are required to send the following documents in English:

  • Curriculum vitae;
  • Motivation letter outlining the reasons for your application;
  • The motivation letter should identify (up to three) MINLAB Research Streams of interest (in order of preference). (Note that alternative proposals outside of the scope of one of the proposed streams can be proposed, in which case please specify the preferred PhD school).
  • An approximately 2-pages long sketch of a potential doctoral project along the lines of the research agenda of the selected research stream(s);
  • Publication list (if applicable);
  • Two recommendation letters from previous professors;
  • Copies of diplomas, transcripts with grades (English translation is required);[1]
  • Proof of English language proficiency (if available).

Selection procedure:

After analysis of the application documents, shortlisted candidates will be invited to a personal interview or interviewed by phone/skype. The positions will be offered to candidates following approval by the steering committee of the Doctoral Training Unit and acceptance by the relevant Doctoral School councils.
