Vacancy: PhD Fellow War, Peace, Justice (Leiden University

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs is looking for a PhD fellow in its research groups War, Peace, Justice and/or Governance of Crisis.

The PhD fellow will develop a research project on the convergence of disaster and remittance studies to contribute to our teaching portfolio in our bachelor and master programmes. Crises, disasters and remittances appear to be elementally connected. For instance, in the first year of the war in Ukraine, as much money in remittances was sent to Ukraine as was Western military support. In Haiti, following the most recent hurricanes and earthquake disasters, remittances spiked. Afghanistan was pushed to the of famine following the sanctioning of the Taliban, only to be brought back from the brink by the informal flow of remittances. Across the globe, when crisis strikes, it is often those who suffer the most who do the most. Crisis and remittances may be linked, yet humanitarian crisis and disaster studies and remittance studies could not be further apart. We seek a PhD candidate eager to investigate the myriad theoretical and empirical puzzles. Candidates should be familiar with one of the research topics and be willing to engage deeply with the other. Candidates should also have a case study in mind (it need not be one of the aforementioned) and be ready to justify that case to the selection committee.

Deadline: o6 September 2024
