Third Sarah van Walsum Lecture: “Making Citizens, Remaking Citizenship: The Case of Refugee Sponsorship”

Third Sarah van Walsum Lecture: “Making Citizens, Remaking Citizenship: The Case of Refugee Sponsorship”.

At the occasion of the opening of the master’s track International Migration and Refugee Law 2017-2018 and in commemoration of the late prof. Sarah van Walsum,  Audrey Macklin (Professor of Law and Chair in Human Rights at the University of Toronto) will present the third Sarah van Walsum Lecture on 8 September 2017, 4 PM, entitled “Making Citizens, Remaking Citizenship: The Case of Refugee Sponsorship”.

Several countries resettle refugees, but Canada is unique in enabling groups of private citizens to nominate and sponsor refugees. In the wake of the Syrian exodus, thousands of Canadians formed private sponsorship groups and applied to sponsor Syrian refugee families. Private sponsorship groups assume financial responsibility for the sponsored family for the first year, and play a primary role in aiding the integration process.  In this lecture, Audrey Macklin will refract the phenomenon of private refugee sponsorship through three lenses:  cosmopolitanism as motive, privatization as mode, and citizenship as effect.  She will consider how the experience of making refugees into citizens activates the citizenship of Canadians, and reflect on the democratic significance of this effect.
