The University of Sheffield · Department of Politics

United Kingdom, Sheffield

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work with Dr. Lucy Mayblin on a 3 year ESRC Future Research Leaders project: Asylum, Welfare and Work in the Age of Austerity (asylumwelfarework.com. The project focuses on policy making in relation to the rights of asylum seekers to take paid employment within the context of asylum seekers in the UK being denied the right to work.

The post holder will work with the Principal Investigator on three key areas of work: determining the cost of asylum support to the UK government over the past 5 years, estimating the wider economic cost of maintaining asylum seekers in a position of poverty (charitable costs of supplementary support). The key question here will be ‘how much is the charitable sector spending on supporting asylum seekers who cannot work?’ The third area of work focuses on estimating potential tax contribution of asylum seekers, should they be permitted to work. Key tasks will include: gathering and analyzing relevant data; liaising with third sector organisations in obtaining data; analyzing and interpreting data generated by the project; writing for publication; undertaking dissemination activities; presenting research findings at conferences and workshops;
helping to organize project related events; and developing one or more proposals for research funding.

The successful applicant will have or be near to completing a doctoral degree in a relevant social science discipline (or equivalent experience), and experience of quantitative research methods. Experience of public policy analysis is desirable, particularly in one or more of the following areas: work/labour market, welfare, immigration, asylum, the third sector.
