Job Purpose:
Undertake research relating to the ESRC / GCRF funded project “Skills acquisition and employability through volunteering by displaced youth in Uganda”.

Summary of Project:
This project investigates the capacity of volunteering to reduce inequalities experienced by displaced youths in Uganda and to build their skills and employability. The project will take an interdisciplinary, mixed method approach, and establish collaborative links with global South refugee NGOs, volunteers and leading global volunteering and development actors. Fieldwork will be conducted in four case study regions – Kampala and the refugee settlements of Bidibidi, Nakivale and Rwamwanja. Responsible to: Dr. Frank Ahimbisibwe, Senior Lecturer/Co- Investigator

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and implement research fieldwork in multiple field sites in Uganda including:
    o Assisting with the design of methodologies and research tools
    o Fieldwork oversight
    o Conducting, interviews, focus groups and other qualitative methods with key stakeholders and young refugees
    o Direct management of field teams
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis at an academic level.
  • Support the Co-Is and PI in communications and dissemination relating to the project
    o Help facilitate stakeholder engagement and project impact
    o Participate in academic conferences
    o Work with the project team to develop abstracts and academic publications
    NB: Specific duties will vary from time to time: the above list is intended to indicate the general nature of the post and is not exhaustive. The post holder will be expected to be flexible in supporting the Faculty by undertaking responsibilities which are commensurate with the grade.

Location:

Post will be based at the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, Mbarara City Campus, Mbarara, although travel nationally and internationally may be required.

Attendance Requirements:
The post is a full time position and requires attendance where necessary at the University’s city campus based on a working week of 37 hours.

A preselection will be made on the basis of the files submitted. Selected candidates will be informed by mid July 2019.
