PhD position focused on social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystems (Maastricht University)

Job description

The department of Organization, Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University, is looking for a full-time doctoral researcher (paid PhD candidate) starting in September 2020. The PhD will focus on social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystems in a European or global context. Candidates are expected to enter the doctoral program of the Graduate School of Business and Economics (GSBE) at Maastricht University and to deliver a doctoral dissertation within four years. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor Martin Carree and Dr Jarrod Ormiston.

Project description

There is growing consensus amongst policymakers, practitioners, academics and entrepreneurs that addressing pressing societal and environmental problems (such as climate change, inequality, and migration flows) requires action across sectors and beyond organizational boundaries. Social entrepreneurship provides a potential vehicle to develop innovative solutions that overcome such problems by engaging cross-sector actors including social movements, NGOs, governments, businesses, investors, and social entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship research however has been overly preoccupied with a focus on individual entrepreneurs, failing to appreciate the importance of ecosystems of action across sectors. A recent stream of entrepreneurship research has begun to focus on the importance of entrepreneurial ecosystems in supporting high-growth entrepreneurship and regional development. This PhD project builds on this work to explore the role of entrepreneurial ecosystems in the growth and impact social entrepreneurial activity. The PhD will draw on mixed methods to explore the practices enacted across entrepreneurial ecosystems to stimulate social entrepreneurship and address complex problems.
