MACIMIDE Co-Director Maarten Vink appointed Chair in Citizenship Studies at EUI
Maarten Vink, Professor of Political Science with a focus on Political Sociology, has been appointed to the Chair in Citizenship Studies at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence from 1 September 2020. Maarten will be on special leave from Maastricht University for the duration of his five year-appointment at the EUI.
The EUI is a unique international centre for doctorate and post-doctorate studies and research, situated in the hills overlooking Florence, Italy. Maarten will succeed Rainer Bauböck as Director of the Global Citizenship research area within the RSCAS’s Global Governance Programme (GGP).
The Global Citizenship research area explores core questions of democracy by studying how states determine (and should determine) who their citizens are and how citizenship laws and practices have evolved in an increasingly global world. Within this area, the Global Citizenship Observatory (GLOBALCIT) publishes databases, national and comparative reports, indicators and debates on citizenship status and electoral rights. It relies on a large international network of academic experts who write country reports, collect legal documents and provide input for comparative databases. Maarten will consolidate and further develop GLOBALCIT databases and related research together with co-directors Rainer Bauböck (EUI/RSCAS), Jelena Dzankic (EUI/RSCAS) and Jo Shaw (University of Edinburgh and Tampere University).
For the duration of his EUI appointment, Maarten will be on special leave from Maastricht University and maintain an honorary position as Professor of Political Science with a focus on Political Sociology.
