GLOBALCIT launches new dataset on acquisition and loss of citizenship around the world

On 2 December 2021, the Global Citizenship Observatory (GLOBALCIT) launches a new GLOBALCIT Citizenship Law Dataset. The Dataset includes information on the different ways in which citizenship can be acquired and lost, and covers information on laws in force on 1 January 2020 in 190 states. The Dataset is organized around a comprehensive typology of modes of acquisition and loss of citizenship, which outlines, in a systematic way, 28 ways in which citizenship can be acquired and 15 ways in which citizenship can be lost. Building on previous GLOBALCIT databases, the systematised information in the new Dataset facilitates comparing rules applicable to similar groups across countries. The Dataset will be updated periodically and gradually backcoded in time to cover the legal situation in previous years. The Dataset provides a global outlook on the current state of citizenship law and is designed for use across academic disciplines as well as by practitioners and policymakers.

Maastricht University is a founding member of GLOBALCIT, an online observatory and research network committed to fact-based and non-partisan analysis of citizenship laws and electoral rights around the world.
