Conference Twenty Years Treaty on European Union: Reflections from Maastricht

On 1 November 2013 it will be exactly 20 years to the day the Maastricht Treaty entered into force. In view of the enormous importance of this Treaty, the City of Maastricht, the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University and its Maastricht Centre for European Law will host a conference on 25 October. The conference will reflect on the birth of the Maastricht Treaty and the changes it has brought about in relation to the economic and monetary union as well as the impact of these changes today, with a particular focus on the notion of European citizenship.

This conference brings together politicians involved in the making of this Treaty, academics and policy-makers with the aim to provide a platform for a dialogue between academics, politicians and policy-makers on the lessons that history can teach us for the future development of the EU.

During the conference there will also be the launch of a book entitled ‘20 Years Treaty on European Union: Reflections from Maastricht’. This volume comprises some thirty contributions written by former and present members of the Maastricht Law Faculty and Maastricht Centre of European law regarding the legal impact of the Maastricht Treaty.
