The Greek nationality code reform: Shifting the threshold of exclusion for the 2nd generation of immigrants
by Afroditi Gavriil (MACIMIDE)
Nationality Law Workshop, Faculty of Law and MACIMIDE
ABSTRACT: The presentation focused on the changes of the Greek nationality law that have taken place since 2010. A special emphasis was given to provisions on granting citizenship at birth and after birth to the 2nd generation of immigrants through the application of the ius soli principle. The discussion also focused on the 2013 judgement of the Greek Council of State (Plenum), which deemed that previously adopted provisions on ius soli were incompatible with the Greek constitution on grounds of respect for and protection of national identity.
Speaker: Afroditi Gavriil is PhD candidate at Panteion University of Athens and MACIMIDE Junior Visiting Fellow.
