Movie screening & Discussion “Mail-Order Brides in the European Union”

During the event, we will fist watch the documentary “Bride Trafficking Unveiled”. The documentary investigates the global bride trafficking industry, in which women become commodities for profit and sex. Travelling from the UK and Ireland to Thailand, journalist Laura Barry meets with Thai women at the heart of this story, as well as their new western husbands, and the other men profiting from these marriages. The documentary achieved international success and created a platform for anti-trafficking stakeholders to explore human trafficking in the context of these sorts of marriages in the UK and Ireland.

After watching the event, we will have a discussion about the mail-order bride phenomenon with Laura Barry, who adapted her university thesis into the documentary “Bride Trafficking Unveiled”. Laura is an Irish solicitor and journalist with an interest in combating human trafficking that developed while studying human rights law at university. Laura continues to work in, and research the area of trafficking in women and children from South East Asia to the UK and Ireland.
