Globalisation, Transnationalism & Development Colloquium, organized in association with Maastricht Centre for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE)

Abstract

The literature that addresses simultaneously the processes of spatial segregation of ethnic economies, the dynamics of transnational social fields, and their mutual interactions, is scarce. This gap of knowledge should be addressed because our recent research experience with ethnic entrepreneurs shows that the existence of a circular migration pattern is an important factor for the emergence and development of the Indian ethnic enclave in Lloret de Mar, a non-European Union group. I have recently started to extend the research to other enclaves like that of Romanians in Castellón (València), the town with the highest concentration of people from this nationality in Spain. This research will allow us to understand the effects of the financial crisis on the economic strategies and the role of transnational relations in enclaves located within the European Union.

Jose Luis Molina is associate professor and director of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (UAB). He is interested in developing methods for studying the emergence of socioeconomic structures, especially ethnic enclaves and transnational fields through a mixed methods approach, with emphasis on ethnography and personal networks. Southeast Europe and Romania in particular, are his main areas of interest. Among his latest publications can be highlighted his chapter “Giving Meaning to Social Networks” in the edited book by Silvia Dominguez and Bettina Hollstein, Mixing methods in social network research, Cambridge University Press, and the article in Field Methods ” Defining and Measuring Transnational Social Structures”.
