Migrating People, Migration Culture: Concepts, Methods and Implications for Development by Prof. Peggy Levitt (Wellesley College and Harvard University)

on the occasion of receiving an honorary doctorate from Maastricht University

On Friday 10 January 2014 Maastricht University will celebrate its 38th anniversary, or Dies Natalis. Five outstanding individuals will receive an honorary doctorate from Maastricht University during the Dies. Professor Peggy Levitt is one of them. To mark and celebrate this occasion, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) of Maastricht University is organising a Public Lecture in which Professor Levitt will give a speech entitled “Migrating People, Migration Culture: Concepts, Methods, and Implications for Development”.

Peggy Levitt is a Professor of Sociology at Wellesley College and a Research Fellow at The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and The Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University, where she co-directs The Transnational Studies Initiative. In her speech at the FASoS Public Lecture, she will deal with concepts and methods for understanding the relationship between migrating people and migrating culture and how they affect poverty alleviation and development. She will showcase findings from three studies on different aspects of the relationship between migrating people and culture—the first is research about how return migrants and social remittances are influencing the health sector in India; the second is about if and how cultural institutions create the building blocks with which to imagine different kinds of (trans)national communities; and the third is on the new forms of global social protection and provision that are arising in response to a world on the move. Rejoinders will be provided by FASoS professors Valentina Mazzucato and Renée van de Vall.

The official Dies Celebration and the presentation of the honorary doctorates will take place in the afternoon at MECC Maastricht. The ceremony will be opened at 15.00 by Rector Magnificus Prof. Dr Luc Soete. The celebration will end at 17.00, followed by a reception.

The colloquium is open to all interested! Please register before December 20 to take part via research-fasos@maastrichtuniversity.nl
