She obtained her doctoral degree at the Catholic University of Leuven in 2000 while practising part-time as a lawyer of counsel in Brussels. Subsequently, she combined the legal profession with a part-time appointment at the Catholic University of Leuven. In 2002, she was appointed a lecturer and then an associate professor at the University of Antwerp.

Between 2008 and 2017, Marta Pertegás served as Secretary and then as First Secretary of the Hague Conference, combining the coordination of legislative and judiciary activities in the fields of international commercial and international procedural law with the supervision of negotiations on new treaties. It was during this period, leading a team of professionals for many years, that she gained most of her experience as an administrator.

At our faculty, Marta Pertegás will assume responsibility for and teach a number of courses in private international law and transnational law. Her work as a researcher will dovetail with research carried out at M-EPLI, ICGI, MACIMIDE, ITEM and the Ius Commune Research School, as well as with the general UM research theme of Europe and a Globalising World.
