CfP: Legal Responses to Forced Mass Migration – Regional Approaches and Perspectives

Since 2015, the European Union has twice faced a significant influx of migrants and refugees, leading to what many denoted as migration/refugee crises. Most recently, the Russian aggression against Ukraine caused the largest migration flows in Europe since World War II. These developments raised questions concerning the EU´s asylum and migration policy, as well as relevant EU response mechanisms and their legal underpinnings. Globally, however, Europe is just one of the regions of the world facing mass migration. The special issue, therefore, aims at exploring legal responses to forced
mass migration from the perspective of the different regions of the world.

Topics for the Special Issue may include, but are not limited to:
responding through law:

  • the mass influx of forced migrants as a legal challenge at the regional and national levels;
  • mechanisms and policies in search for a toolbox in response to crisis;
  • the issue of the mass influx in various regions of the world and the specificities of applicable legal frameworks;
  • definition of basic international legal concepts and frameworks applicable in the context of mass migration.
  • the changing role of institutions within the process of responding to a crisis;
  • development of relevant legal norms and their impact and implementation in practice.

Submission and Selection Process
Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be submitted to both Guest Editors of the special issue, Dr Věra Honusková (honuskov@prf.cuni.cz) and Dr Martin Faix (martin.faix@upol.cz). Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to develop a full paper (6000 – 8000 words). We particularly welcome the international and regional legal dimensions. An analysis limited to the national legal system is beyond the journal’s scope. The Editors will select articles based on the quality of research, diversity, novelty, and relevance of the topic. The author(s) are responsible for proofreading. Full papers will be subject to a double-blind review process.

Timeline and Deadlines
The deadline for submission of abstracts is 21 January 2023. A decision on acceptance of the abstract will be sent by 07 February 2023. Authors of selected abstracts will be invited to submit their full papers by 30 April 2023 for peer review. The Special Issue will be published in the second half of 2023.
