CfA: European Commission Data Challenge on Migration and Demography

Data challenge launched at the Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography (KCMD) on the topic of integration of migrants in EU cities. Through this initiative the European Commission makes available to interested researchers a large data set showing population counts at high spatial resolution (grid with 100 by 100 m cells) by country of origin in 8 EU Member States (DE, FR, IT, ES, PT, UK, IE, NL). The data set is based on ad hoc extraction of 2011 census data from National Statistical Institutes and covers around 178 countries of origin of migrants and 45 thousand local administrative units in destination countries.

The idea behind this data challenge is that selected applicants will be given the right to download the entire data set and use it freely for their research with the only conditions of producing a short paper or poster of their main findings by September 2018 and of citing the initiative in possible publications.

No monetary prizes are offered but the authors of the best studies will be invited to present their results in a dedicated workshop for EU policy makers and other stakeholders at the end of 2018.

Research proposals covering all aspects of integration of migrants both from qualitative and quantitative disciplines are welcome. The studies could be of general nature or more specifically looking at certain cities, neighborhoods or communities and done in combination with other data sets or field work.

At this website, you will find all the information about this initiative and here you will be able to explore the data set.
