Job description
FASoS is seeking an assistant or associate professor with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research in Globalisation and Development Studies.
Research is carried out within the context of the Research Institute Arts and Social Sciences and, in particular, relating to the interdisciplinary research programme Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. S/He is expected to develop international research projects and to attract external funding that is related to and in dialogue with a transnational research approach.
S/He will contribute to the teaching and coordination of courses and supervision of internships, projects and theses primarily in the Master Globalisation & Development Studies (MA GDS), and the Minor Globalisation and Poverty. Over 35 students, most of them international, are currently registered on the Master programme. Furthermore the candidate will be involved in new initiatives to bring teaching on the Global South more into our Bachelor programs. The division of teaching and research duties follows the regular division used at the Faculty of 60% teaching and management and 40% research. The research time can be extended through external fundraising.
Requirements
The candidate will have a PhD degree in a relevant social science discipline (anthropology, geography, international development studies, history, sociology) with a focus on the Global South. Fluency in English is a prerequisite, while non-Dutch speaking applicants should be willing to learn Dutch.
(S)he will be open to interdisciplinary work and must display outstanding quality in research, a strong sense of research identity, recognition in the field and intellectual openness. The candidate must have a strong track record in grant acquisition (associate professor) or demonstrated potential there for (assistant professor). A substantial number of international academic publications will be imperative. A relevant international network should provide a solid base for acquiring research funding. (S)he will have experience with leading externally funded research projects (associate professor) and applying for individual grants (associate and assistant professor).
(S)he is an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and has demonstrated ability in teaching coordination roles. The candidate must be able to demonstrate that (s)he is capable of teaching effectively in a way that stimulates student learning and maximizes student participation in group discussions. As such, (s)he will be an inspiring and stimulating supervisor. Experience with teaching international classrooms is preferable. All members of staff are expected to place an emphasis on high quality teaching, as reflected in our system of small-scale problem based learning (PBL).
The candidate is expected to be a genuine coach and leader, as well as a team player. (S)he should be flexible and have broad academic interests and an open, effective management style.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) has a staff of about 250, and over 1,800 students. All programmes are offered in English. Students come from all over the world. FASoS offers two 3-year Bachelor programmes: Arts and Culture, and European Studies, eight different 1-year Master programmes and two 2-year research Master programmes. Its Graduate School takes in around 10 PhD students each year. Research is organised around four programmes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Maastricht University Science, Technology and Society Studies; Arts, Media and Culture; and Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in several recently renovated 18th-century buildings in the historic city centre of Maastricht.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenure track associate professor, or an assistant professor who will, based on performance, be on a 5-year tenure track to an associate professor position, with 60% teaching and 40% research time. In the first year of employment, the candidate will have ample opportunity to demonstrate their talents, enterprising approach and constructive attitude. Thereafter, on the basis of good performance, the appointment will be extended by another four years. Subsequently, there will be the possibility to apply for tenure (appointment for an indefinite period of time).
Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience. This implies a minimum of € 3.259,– and a maximum of € 5.498,– gross per month for a full-time appointment of 38 hours per week (salary scale 11-13, Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment).
Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you might be eligible for an allowance for alternative housing.
Other secondary conditions include e.g. a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.
