Assistant professor in Globalization and Development at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Society Studies, Maastricht University 1.0fte 6-year tenure-track position
FASoS is seeking an assistant professor with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research on a contemporary issue of globalisation and development with specific reference to the Global South and from a transnational perspective.
Research is carried out within the context of the Research Institute for Arts and Social Sciences and, in particular, relating to the interdisciplinary research programme Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. You are expected to develop international research projects and to attract external funding that is related to the research programme’s themes.
You will contribute to the teaching and coordination of courses and supervision of internships, projects and theses in the BA and MA programmes of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, especially in the BSc Global Studies and MA Globalisation and Development Studies. The division of teaching and research duties follows the regular division used at the Faculty of 60% teaching and management and 40% research. The research time can be extended through external fundraising.
Requirements
You have a PhD degree in development studies, human geography, anthropology, sociology, political economy or another relevant social science discipline with a focus on regions in the Global South, be it in Africa, Asia and/or Latin America. Your research should show how a contemporary issue of globalisation and development is experienced by and/or affects a region in the Global South and how this issue can be understood from a broader transnational perspective that interconnects regions within and beyond the Global South. The thematic focus is open: any number of themes (for example: climate change, knowledge for development, migration, development financing, data justice, and peace & reconciliation) merit a transnational approach and we welcome applications from candidates who have worked in any of these or other thematic fields. You should have experience with a diversity of qualitative methods. Familiarity with quantitative methods is a plus. Fluency in English is a prerequisite, while non-Dutch speaking applicants should be willing to learn Dutch (basic level). Candidates with relevant work experience in an academic position after obtaining their PhD is a plus.
You are an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and have demonstrated ability in thesis supervision and teaching roles. Experience with course development is an asset. You are able to stimulate student learning and to maximize student participation in our system of small-scale problem based learning (PBL). Experience with teaching in international classrooms is preferable.
You display outstanding quality in research and have experience with an interdisciplinary approach. You have a relevant international network and a track record or potential for grant acquisition. International peer-reviewed academic publications are imperative.
You are a team player, have an open, effective management style, and are ready to fulfil an administrative role in the faculty.
