Adrian Shin: New MACIMIDE Junior Visiting Fellow at FASOS
Adrian Shin, PhD student at the University of Michigan, has been awarded a GROW Visiting Fellowship (Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide) from the Dutch Science Foundation NWO, in collaboration with the US National Science Foundation, to do fieldwork in Europe for his PhD project “Primary Resources, Secondary Labor: Resource Booms and Immigration Policy in the Netherlands and Scandinavia”. Shin will be supervised by Prof. Maarten Vink.
In that project he investigates why, in the early 1970s, immigration authorities in the Netherlands and most of Scandinavia placed a ban on labor migration from the developing world. Denmark and Sweden shut doors to Third World nationals in 1972. Only Sweden made significant progress in reforming immigration policy to be more inclusive in the 1990s while, as of today, all other countries’ immigration policies are still based on the 1970s immigration ban. What explains this policy divergence among the welfare states in the region?
The Visiting Fellowship will be hosted by the Maastricht Center for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE) during the first half of 2016. The grant is co-funded by Maastricht University.
