26/06/2023 – Webinar: Extending social protection to migrant workers in Gulf countries

There is an upcoming ODI and ILO webinar on Extending social protection to migrant workers in Gulf countries. This online event will take place on Monday 26 June, 09:30 – 10:45 (GMT + 01).

International migrant workers often face multiple challenges and barriers in accessing social protection, leaving many with low social protection coverage.

The challenges of extending social protection to migrant workers are particularly evident in the countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC). While citizens largely work in jobs with generous social protection provisions, migrant workers generally lack access to national schemes.

This event will explore social protection for migrant workers in the Gulf countries: the state of play, recommendations and opportunities to expand coverage. We will convene actors working in this space – across policy, civil society, research and development sectors – to discuss policy options and possible avenues for progressive reform. We would be delighted to hear your perspective in the discussion.

Speakers:

Jessica Hagen-Zanker, Senior Research Fellow Migration, ODI (Chair)
Luca Pellerano, Senior Social Protection Specialist, ILO
Lea Bou Khater, Social Protection Technical Officer, ILO
Christy Lowe, Senior Research Officer, ODI
Patricia Barandun, Head of Section Migration and Forced Displacement, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)

More speakers to be confirmed.

The event will be hosted by ODI, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s Regional Office for Arab States and with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
