The Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) at the University of Mannheim offers the following two Postdoc positions:

A Postdoc position (TV‐L E13) at the Chair of »Sociology of Migration and Integration«

The MZES is an interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Mannheim dedicated to comparative European social research and the analysis of European integration processes. It is Germany’s largest university‐based social‐science research centre.

The Centre seeks to recruit an outstanding social scientist as a Postdoc at the MZES Chair of »Sociology of Migration and Integration« lead by Professor Marc Helbling. The successful candidate is expected to do research in the field of migration and integration and to publish in international academic journals as well as to teach two courses (four hours) per week at the University’s School of Social Sciences.

In addition to the resources of the University, MZES supports its postdocs with a dedicated IT department, an internal Data and Methods Unit, an extensive Centre library, support from project management offices, and a public relations officer.

Candidates should have completed their PhD with an excellent dissertation in Sociology, Political Science, Economics or a related discipline. We expect very advanced quantitative methodological skills and publications, particularly in peer‐reviewed journals. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and will be public sector pay scheme (100%, TV‐L E13), with additional employer benefits. The contract is limited to three years and can be renewed as stipulated by the German Act of Academic Fixed‐Term Contract (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz), starting preferably 1 September 2020. In principle, the position can be shared.

A Postdoc position at the Chair of »Sociology of Migration and Integration« in the project »Political and Religious Extremism«

The MZES is an interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Mannheim dedicated to comparative European social research and the analysis of European integration processes. It is Germany’s largest university‐based social‐science research centre. In addition to the resources of the University, MZES supports its postdocs with a dedicated IT department, an internal Data and Methods Unit, an extensive Centre library, support from project management offices, and a public
relations officer.

The Centre seeks to recruit an outstanding Postdoc in the project “Political and Religious Extremism. Measuring and Explaining Explicit and Implicit Attitudes”. The project is financed by the German Research Foundation for three years and led by Prof. Marc Helbling at the MZES Chair of »Sociology of Migration and Integration« and by Dr. Sebastian Jungkunz at the University of Duisburg‐Essen. The aim of this project is to develop a survey‐based instrument that allows to measure various forms of political and religious extremism, to compare explanatory factors of extremist views
and to study the relationship between extremist and non‐extremist groups. The Postdoc will be responsible to design and conduct two surveys in Germany, the Netherlands and Great Britain.

Candidates should have completed their PhD with an excellent dissertation in Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Economics or a related discipline. We expect very advanced quantitative methodological skills and publications, particularly in peer‐reviewed journals as well as experience with survey research, scale development and ideally also Implicit Association Tests. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and will be public sector pay scheme (100%, TV‐L E13), with additional employer benefits. The contract is limited to three years starting preferably 1 September 2020 subject to final approval of the project.
